REXENE NAMES ANDREW J. SMITH CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
DALLAS, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Rexene Corporation (NYSE: RXN)

announced today that Andrew J. Smith (50) has been named chief executive officer of the company. Smith will also serve as a director.
Smith had previously served with Rexene for 15 years, until January 1991, most recently as president, chief executive officer and a director.
Smith said, "At the time of my departure last year, a skilled management team had positioned the company for future growth. Over the past year the company has made real progress with its financial restructuring and continued its operating improvements and customer focus. The management team and organization continues in place to allow Rexene to emerge from its restructuring and capitalize on anticipated improvements in the industry and general economy. I cannot imagine a more exciting time to rejoin the company where I've spent most of my professional career."
Arthur L. Goeschel, who was appointed last week as chairman of the board for Rexene, said, "I've worked with Andy for several years and respect his unique leadership abilities and industry knowledge. His decision to rejoin Rexene reaffirms my belief in the fundamental strength of the company."
Smith began his Rexene career in 1976 as vice president, sales and marketing for its Consolidated Thermoplastics Company (CTC) division. Named president of CTC in 1981, he was instrumental in the growth of that division through the early 1980s.
He was named senior vice president and a director of Rexene in 1984. In those capacities he led the company's successful efforts to reinvigorate the marketing and customer focus in its polymer and petrochemical business. In May 1988, he became president and chief operating officer and shortly thereafter was promoted to chief executive officer.
Rexene Corporation, through its principal operating subsidiary, Rexene Products Company, manufactures thermoplastic resins and petrochemical products including polyethylene and polypropylene resins and plastic film. Rexene, headquartered in Dallas, has manufacturing facilities in Texas, Wisconsin, Georgia, Delaware and Utah.
