REVIEW: Being with Flowers, Flowers and Inspiration for the Modern Home.

Buttercups, lilies, sunflowers and roses are among the flowers used for the arrangements in 'Being with Flowers'.

The photographs presenting flower arrangements in this book show how flowers can make a setting complete and add the finishing touch to a room's decoration.

The pictures take the central place, with the text providing comments, advice and explanations. The title states that the modern home is in the focus and the interiors provided are more or less modern in style.

I always get suspicious when the introduction to a book is written in capitals only. Not only is it hard to read, but it also seems the author or the person who planned the layout wants to be too trendy. There was no need to worry though. Despite every chapter seemingly being introduced in the same fashion, the running text is 'normal' and the book is pleasant to read and look at.

There are also quotes to complement the text by people such as Lao Tzu, Ryokan and Bhagavad Gita. Perhaps there is also something of an eastern influence in the arrangements as well as in the quotes. For the modern home I guess this would be quite right, with Asian influences not just in food and cooking but also from Feng Shui and so on.

This is not a bad book. It could make a nice gift book for the right person. To me, however, it is just a little too trendy, with too much effort spent trying to be 'right'. I admire eastern simplicity in design and like timeless styles, so a trendy book is not my cup of tea.

Still, there is something that appeals to me here. Certainly some of the arrangements in the book should stand the test of time and I particularly enjoyed one arrangement with floating cream-coloured roses in black bowls with a green straw across the bowl.

Another nice thing is the use of 'simple' flowers like buttercups and blue bells. There was also a picture with pussy willows - it is surprising how nice familiar things can look in a different setting!

CONCLUSION: This book would make a nice gift for the right person. A little too trendy for my liking but that can be just the right thing for another person. A nice book, but nothing revolutionary.
