REVCO CHAIRMAN SEES PROFITABILITY AFTER BANKRUPTCY
TWINSBURG, Ohio, Dec. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Revco D.S., Inc. Chairman

and CEO, Boake A. Sells, said the drugstore chain is positioned to attain increasing profits after emerging from bankruptcy early in 1992.
Speaking to groups of financial analysts in Boston and New York today, Sells said, "The numbers are here now. They are building. The track has been laid, and we are going to exit Chapter 11 with a very strong engine."
"The rock upon which this chain will prosper is the pharmacy," Sells said. He reported that the company used the Chapter 11 process to invest more than $25 million in state-of-the-art technology, including point-of-sale scanning and Prescription Access Link, an interactive store-to-store pharmacy computer system. Prescription Access Link provides medication information to customers and accommodates the processing of third-party prescription payments. Revco is the first to install such systems throughout the chain.
"We have changed everything," Sells said. "The only thing left is 60 percent of the real estate and the name. We sold 40 percent of the stores and took 40 percent out of the overhead. We changed all major accounting systems and remodeled more than 550 stores. We have built a machine for the 1990s, and it already is paying off," he said.
Revco earlier this week reported that operating profits for the first half of its fiscal year ended Nov. 16 were up $23 million from a year ago and that comparable store sales were up nine percent.
Sells said he was urging all creditors to support the reorganization plan proposed by Revco's trade, bank, and noteholder creditor committees. The plan calls for many creditors to become shareholders of the reorganized Revco which would continue operations as an independent corporation.
Revco operates 1,150 drug stores in 10 contiguous eastern states, filling more than 43 million prescriptions yearly. The privately held company is based in Twinsburg, Ohio.
