RETAIL, WHOLESALE AND DEPARTMENT STORE UNION APPROVES MERGER AGREEMENT WITH UNITED FOOD AND COMMERCIAL WORKERS

 NEW YORK, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, AFL-CIO, CLC has voted approval of a merger agreement with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW). More than 82,000 votes have been cast in favor of the agreement. At a meeting in Pittsburgh, on Saturday, June 12, 318 delegates representing 127 locals, joint boards and councils in the United States voted by a margin of 77,355 to 855 to approve the agreement. This represents an approval margin of 98.9 percent.
 In addition, 11 locals representing 5,000 members in Canada have already voted to also approve the merger agreement. Another 34 locals, joint boards and councils representing 20,000 members in Canada have yet to vote. A meeting for Canadian locals to consider the merger agreement will be held on July 10 in Toronto.
 The effective date of the merger agreement is Oct. 1, 1993. Under the terms of the agreement, the RWDSU will become a Council within the UFCW, with its own officers and structure. For the first four years, the RWDSU will be deemed an independent entity by national and international labor organizations with which it is affiliated; and the RWDSU's membership will be recorded separately from that of the UFCW. The RWDSU Council will continue to be headquartered in New York City.
 The UFCW, which is headquartered in Washington, will vote on the agreement at its International Convention in July in Toronto. The combined membership of the two unions will total 1.4 million members in the United States and Canada.
 RWDSU International President Lenore Miller, commenting on the merger agreement voted, stated, "The combined strength of these two unions will help us to better serve the members we represent and will give us greater ability to organize."
