 RESEARCH FRONTIERS' JAPANESE LICENSEE DEMONSTRATES
 WALL OF 'SMART' WINDOWS
WOODBURY, N.Y., April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Research Frontiers Incorporated (NASDAQ: REFR, REFRW; Boston Stock Exchange: RFR, RFRW), announced today that its licensee, the Japan Steel Works, Ltd., has installed a wall of electrically operated, variable light transmission "smart" windows in its new office building near Tokyo.
"Research Frontiers and the Japan Steel Works believe this is the first light-controlling wall of its kind in the world," Robert L. Saxe, president of Research Frontiers, said.
"The Japan Steel Works has reported using the demonstration wall of 'smart' windows to assess the long-term durability of the product and to solicit opinions on the use of such windows from construction and design engineers who are prospective customers," Saxe added.
The wall of "smart" windows comprises a total of 50 windows, each about 1 1/2 square feet, arranged in a pattern five windows high by 10 windows wide, which utilizes liquid suspension light control technology licensed to the Japan Steel Works by Research Frontiers. The windows can be controlled with a rheostat to change rapidly, whenever desired, between a dark blue "off" state and a transparent "on" state. It is possible to obtain various degrees of light transmission between the dark and transparent states, depending on the voltage applied.
The wall is used as a partition between conference rooms on the reception floor of a new 19-story building built by the Japan Steel Works in the city of Fuchu, about 12 1/2 miles west of Tokyo.
The Japan Steel Works is working jointly with the Central Glass Company, Japan's third largest flat glass manufacturer, under license from Research Frontiers. On April 24, 1992, Research Frontiers announced that Glaverbel, S.A., a Belgian corporation controlled by Asahi Glass Company, Ltd., Japan's largest manufacturer of flat glass, has taken a license from Research Frontiers covering self-dimmable automotive rear-view mirrors.
