REQUEST MAGAZINE EXAMINES 'YEAR OF THE THUG'

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The cover story of REQUEST magazine's January year-in-review issue identifies not a single star or album but a troublesome trend in the entertainment business: the year of the artist as a young thug.
"While many people focus narrowly on the artists and lyrics of rap music," REQUEST editor Keith Moerer said, "the thugging of popular music crosses all genres." The story, written by Claudia Perry, pop music critic for the Houston Post, details the law-breaking actions -- from carrying illegal weapons to murder -- of Kurt Cobain of Nirvana, crooner Harry Connick, Jr., Canadian dancehall performer Snow, rappers Snoop Doggy Dogg and Dr. Dre, hip-hopper Tupack Amaru Shakur, and many others.
"Pop music has always been an outlet for rebellious behavior," Perry writes in her crime-and-music story, "but only recently has that rebellion gone from ignoring social strictures against promiscuity, drug use, and miscegenation to violent separatism backed by threats as well as action. In the '60s, music brought people together; in the '90s, it wins converts at gunpoint."
Perry's story points out that thug rock and rap have won audiences in both white suburbia and the inner cities, thanks in part, she writes, to pervasive violence in movies and television and to fortysomething white male critics rarely inconvenienced by sexism, racism, and homophobia.
REQUEST magazine, the second-largest music magazine in the country, covers a broad range of music and music-related issues for its core audience of 18- to 34-year-olds. It is audited by ABC and has offices in New York City and Minneapolis.
