REPUBLIC WASTE INDUSTRIES ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER 1993 EARNINGS OUTLOOK

ATLANTA, April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Republic Waste Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ: RWIN; Toronto) today announced that operating income and earnings per share from continuing operations for the first quarter of 1993 will be substantially less than operating income in the first quarter of 1992 and the $.06 per share from continuing operations before unusual items reported for the first quarter of 1992.
Management attributes the decrease in operating income to a decline in profitability of the hazardous waste segment due to unusually adverse weather conditions in the northeastern U.S. and Canada in the first quarter causing a slowdown in its collection and treatment of certain waste streams. This, combined with price and volume competition in these areas, will negatively affect the company's earnings in the first quarter.
Solid waste operations are showing good progress and will be favorably impacted in the first quarter of 1993 by the late March opening of the company's landfill expansion site in Michigan and the contribution of the previously reported acquisition of Cleveland Container Services, Inc. Continued solid progress is expected in this segment for the balance of the year.
The company's actual first quarter 1993 results will be reported on May 4.
Republic Waste Industries is an emerging waste service company serving the needs of a broad range of solid and hazardous waste generators in the North America environmental services industry.
