REPUBLIC OF HUNGARY COMMITS TO OPEN SYSTEMS; FIRST EAST EUROPEAN
GOVERNMENT TO DEMAND XPG COMPLIANCE IN OPEN SYSTEMS STRATEGY
BUDAPEST, Hungary, Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The government of the Republic of Hungary has become the first East European administration to commit to an open systems strategy. Specifically, it intends to use the X/Open XPG brand in procurement. The government has also initiated the process of joining the X/Open User Council to support the implementation of its future strategy.
The commitment comes as a result of the development of a government action plan on information technology, which has been formulated with the assistance of the European Commission, representatives of individual national governments within the EEC, and X/Open.
An advisor to the government stated, "The emergence of the economy of Hungary demands that we take an informed view on the potential of developing technologies. In many ways, we are fortunate in not having a vast installed based of legacy systems. Open systems and their promise of efficiency and cost-effectiveness could provide a springboard for the effectiveness of government administration and the economic climate as a whole. We are also fortunate in that much of our existing expertise in information technology is 'UNIX-based.'"
Geoff Morris, X/Open president and chief executive officer, added, "The decision of the Hungarian government is another landmark for the development of open systems. Despite the economic challenges that face their country, we must applaud their far-sighted decision in developing the foundations of an information technology infrastructure on a thoroughly sound open systems basis."
Among the supporting organizations are the Commission of the European Community, government bodies from France, Britain and the United States, and the government of Nord-Rhein Westfalen, which will be assisting in developing the strategy. Nord-Rhein Westfalen is the largest of the German regional authorities and was one of the first to recognize the important potential of open systems in government. As well as developing its own internal open systems strategy, it has also, in collaboration with X/Open, established a center of excellence in open systems, the Software Industrie Support Zentrum, based in Dortmund, which is assisting companies to develop and use open systems products. It is this organization that will be helping to provide expertise and training to the Hungarian government.
The Hungarian government administration joins 44 other leading international companies, government authorities and representative associations on the X/Open User Council, the body that represents user opinion within the X/Open structure. The User Council has overall direction of the company's Xtra user requirements program, as well as monitoring the continued relevance and value of X/Open's work.
X/Open, founded in 1984, is a worldwide, independent open systems organization dedicated to developing an open, multi-vendor Common Applications Environment (CAE) based on de facto and international standards. Specification of the Common Applications Environment is achieved through close cooperation between users, vendors and standards organizations worldwide.
