REPEAT/ SQA(R) Ships SQA Robot(tm) 4.0 with new Object Testing(tm) Technology for Windows client/server applications; SQA Robot 4.0 goes beyond GUI testing to test objects in PowerBuilder, Visual Basic, and other development environments.

leader in automated testing of Microsoft(R) Windows(R) client/server applications, today announced the general availability of SQA Robot(tm) 4.0, a major upgrade to the company's award-winning product that lets users create and run automated tests on enterprise Windows client/server applications. SQA Robot 4.0 is available as a standalone product, or can be purchased as part of the SQA Suite(tm) for a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for testing enterprise client/server applications.

SQA Robot 4.0 introduces SQA's new Object Testing(tm) technology to go beyond testing just an application's GUI. Object Testing inspects and verifies all of the properties and attributes of an object, including non-visible properties that cannot be tested manually. With Object Testing, SQA Robot 4.0 provides even greater object-level integration with PowerBuilder( and Visual Basic(, for the most comprehensive testing of client/server applications developed with these popular development tools.

"SQA's new Object Testing technology begins a new generation of testing power that goes beyond GUI testing," said Ron Nordin, president and CEO of SQA. "The ability to test object properties -- even if they're not displayed in the GUI -- will become increasingly important as applications become partitioned into Windows clients accessing objects on shared servers. SQA is leading the move into this new area just as we lead the introduction of GUI testing technology for Microsoft Windows."

SQA Robot 4.0 also introduces SQABasic(tm), a new integrated Multiple Document Interface (MDI) scripting environment that is compatible with Visual Basic. With SQABasic, users can view and edit test scripts while recording, combining the ease of Object-Oriented Recording(tm) with the full power of programming. SQABasic also provides an integrated editor and debugger with an animated playback mode and on-line syntax checking. Test scripts can be easily extended with procedural control and conditional logic, and SQABasic can call any .DLL or Windows API function. SQA Robot also offers the option to use Visual Basic as the scripting environment and compile/runtime engine, and allows the user to switch between scripting environments at any time.

"We have been using SQA products for 7 months, and we are participating in the beta program for SQA Robot 4.0," stated Wayne Andre, senior information analyst at Eli Lilly and Company. "With SQA Robot 4.0, SQA should continue its technical support of the Windows platform by offering a complete enterprise testing solution. After evaluating four of the most popular testing tools, we chose SQA Suite because it is a tool that is comprehensive, powerful, and easy to learn and use. SQA Robot 4.0 has added to test effectiveness and efficiency, especially in the area of test script maintenance."

"The new version of SQA Robot provides the features that our customers have requested the most," said Eric Schurr, SQA's vice president of product management and marketing. "With our new integrated Visual Basic-compatible programming environment, we now appeal to the sophisticated programmer as well as the user who demands high ease-of-use. And our advances in Object Testing and Object-Oriented Recording continue our strategy of tight object-level integration with leading RAD client/server tools. SQA Robot 4.0 continues to lead the Windows client/server testing market."

SQA Robot 4.0 Major Features

Object Testing: SQA Robot 4.0 sets a new standard in Windows client/server testing by delivering SQA's unique Object Testing technology. Object Testing inspects and verifies all of the properties and attributes of the objects in a Windows client/server application, including non-visible properties that cannot be tested manually. Object Testing requires no programming -- simply click on an object and all of its properties are displayed. For example, SQA Robot can test the SQL call that a PowerBuilder DataWindow makes to a database, or the formula used to calculate a computed field. SQA Robot even handles environment-specific objects, such as PowerBuilder DataWindows, Visual Basic VBXes, and SQLWindows Table Windows. By testing all of the components of a Windows client/server application, SQA Robot offers the most comprehensive, object-level support available.

Expanded Object-Oriented Recording for PowerBuilder: SQA Robot 4.0 offers even greater object-level integration with Powersoft's PowerBuilder client/server development environment. SQA was the first automated test tool vendor to announce support for the newest version of the PowerBuilder Testing API (PTAPI 2.0). SQA Robot 4.0 also provides Object-Oriented Recording within a DataWindow to ensure reliable playback of tests even if the GUI of the DataWindow is changed.

Integrated, Interactive Scripting Environment: SQA Robot 4.0 generates test scripts in SQABasic, an integrated scripting environment that is compatible with Visual Basic. With SQABasic, users view and edit test scripts while recording, combining the ease of Object-Oriented Recording with the power of programming. SQABasic provides an integrated editor and debugger with an animated playback mode and on-line syntax checking. Test scripts can be easily extended with procedural control and conditional logic, and any .DLL or Windows API function can be called from SQABasic. SQA Robot also offers the option to use Visual Basic as the scripting environment and compile/runtime engine, and allows users to switch between scripting environments at any time.

Timers: SQABasic provides the ability to define, start, and stop timers in test scripts for detailed timing measurements. Timers provide a way to test the performance of a client/server application by testing how long certain actions, such as a call to an outside database, take to complete. Timing measurements are made in milliseconds for a high degree of accuracy.

Seamless Integration with SQA LoadTest: SQA Robot 4.0 delivers tight integration with SQA LoadTest(. SQA LoadTest runs SQA Robot test scripts without modification (SQA Robot 3.1 and above). SQA LoadTest also recognizes SQA Robot timers for accurate timing measurement. In addition, SQA LoadTest can be launched from SQA Robot or SQA Manager as part of the seamless integration designed into the SQA Suite.

Improved User Interface: SQA Robot 4.0 provides a new state-of-the-art user interface that lets users customize the SQA Robot "look and feel" to the way an organization or individual works. The

SQABasic environment is a Multiple Document Interface (MDI) environment that allows multiple scripts to be open and edited. Users can design their own tear-away floating toolbars and position them anywhere on the screen to optimize the viewing area. And, SQA Robot 4.0 can be hidden or minimized during recording to make more room for the application being tested.

Direct Link from the SQA Test Log Viewer to the Test Script: For ease of analysis, SQA Robot 4.0 provides a direct link from the SQA Test Log Viewer to SQA Robot test scripts. By highlighting a failure in the Test Log Viewer, users can link directly to the line of their test script that caused that failure. This helps analyze the cause of the failure and determine whether it is a defect. In addition, this feature speeds script maintenance by allowing the user to instantly edit a script while analyzing its results.

Compatible with Existing SQA Robot Versions: SQA Robot 4.0 offers compatibility with the current product version of SQA Robot. SQA Robot 3.1 scripts can be run in SQA Robot 4.0, and all scripts written in SQABasic are compatible with Visual Basic and vice versa. SQA Robot 4.0 costs $2,495 per seat and is available immediately. The product includes 60-days of free 800 technical support and product upgrades. SQA can be reached at 800-228-9922 or 617-939-3000.
