On October 12, 2001, President George W. Bush signed Executive Order 13230 creating a new Presidential Advisory Commission aimed at closing the academic achievement gap of Hispanic Americans. The 17 Commissioners appointed by the President represent education, business, the professional sector and community organizations. The Commission's success will be measured and presented in the form of an Interim Report to the President due September 30, 2002, and a final report due March 3, 2003.

On January 28th, President George Bush announced the appointment of Charles Patrick Garcia, a Boca Raton entrepreneur, Chairman and CEO of the state's fastest growing privately held investment banking company to the "President's Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans."

Garcia, a Hispanic American has been honored both domestically and internationally for his success as a businessman and his contributions to the Hispanic community. Garcia is only one of 17 members of the President's prestigious, newly appointed commission. Mr. Garcia is also a member of the Florida Board of Education, the 7-member panel created by Florida Governor Jeb Bush in July 2001, responsible for revolutionizing Florida's entire school system.

Florida International University President, Dr. Mitch Maidique will host Mr. Garcia during a visit to the campus. As part of Mr. Garcia's strategy to "learn about the needs of students, the faculty and administration" in Florida's schools, Mr. Garcia has visited with various universities to obtain a first-hand understanding of challenges and needs facing the state's educational system.

Mr. Garcia will teach a class from 11:00 AM until 11:45 AM. Dr. Maidique will introduce for his class presentation. Mr. Garcia and Dr. Maidique will then be available for questions and interviews concerning education issues in Florida and the country.
