(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 2001--The Association of Alternative Newsweeklies holds its annual convention July 11 through July 14, 2001, at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in New Orleans.

AAN will issue the following news releases during the annual convention, which will be available on site in New Orleans or from Business Wire:

July 12 AAN Financial Report, a summary of the alternative
 newsweekly industry's 2000 financial statistics

July 13 Alternative Newsweekly Award winners

July 11
 8 p.m. Second-line from Ritz-Carlton to Storyville District
 on Bourbon Street

July 12
 1-3 p.m. Alternative Newsweekly Awards Luncheon Winners
 announced in 15 writing and graphic/design categories,
 featuring comic Harry Shearer

July 13
 1-3 p.m. First Amendment Luncheon
 Featuring Academy Award winning-director Oliver Stone,
 who is no stranger to First Amendment controversy.

 11:45 a.m.
 - 1 p.m. Writing for Color
 Pulitzer Prize-winning author Rick Bragg, national
 correspondent for The New York Times, uses language
 like a paintbrush. In this session, Mr. Bragg talks
 about his palette--where he found it, how he uses it,
 and what he does when it starts to go a little dry.

 4:45-6 p.m. An Oral Examination: Oral History
 This panel brings oral historians together to discuss
 their methods of turning the spoken word into
 compelling prose, and considers questions both
 philosophical and technical. Moderated by Mike
 Lenehan, Chicago Reader. Panel: Nick Spitzer,
 "American Routes"; Toni Schlesinger,
 The Village Voice.

 - 1 p.m. Poetry in the Newspaper: Where Is It and What Is It?
 Andrei Codrescu went searching. Here's what he found.
 Presented by Andrei Codrescu, NPR and Gambit Weekly.

 Musicians Talk Back
 A panel of musicians, including two-time Grammy
 nominee Irma Thomas, "Soul Queen of New Orleans," and
 swamp-rocker Charles "C.C."Adcock, talk back to music
 critics.

 3-4:14 p.m. Chefs Talk Back
 Chefs at some of New Orleans' most famous restaurants,
 including Frank Brigtsen of "Brigtsen's," Michelle
 McRaney, executive chef at Mr. B's, Leah Chase of
 Dooky Chase, and Minh Bui of Lemon Grass and 56
 Degrees, give the perspective from behind the kitchen
 doors.

July 14
 10-11:15 am Paper and Pen: Corrections Reporting
 Jail is the ultimate closed society. What are the
 primary issues faced by reporters going behind the
 wall? What do those with prison experience (on both
 sides of the gate) consider the biggest stories not
 being told? This panel presents an unguarded look at
 a popular alt-weekly beat: prison writing. Moderated
 by Alan Prendergast, Westword.

 Panel: Tori Marlan, Chicago Reader; Anne Schindler,
 Folio Weekly and Robert KingWilkerson.

 3:30-6 p.m. Annual Membership Meeting
 Agenda includes admission of new members and election
 of board members.
