RELIANCE ELECTRIC ANNOUNCES PROGRESS ON SUPERCONDUCTING MOTORS

 CLEVELAND, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Reliance Electric Company (NYSE: REE) has announced the successful completion and operation of a superconductor motor with an output power 60 times greater than previously developed prototypes. The alternating current (AC) synchronous motor was built with the field winding made of high temperature superconducting (HTS) wires. The racetrack coils, developed and fabricated by American Superconductor Corporation (NASDAQ: AMSC), each contain over 300 meters of flexible HTS wire, representing a major step in applying HTS technology for power applications.
 Previously, Reliance had built several direct current (DC) motor prototypes with superconducting field coils that delivered shaft output power in the 25-30 watt range. This new, more powerful motor, with an output power of 1490 watts, or 2 horsepower (HP), is a significant step beyond the earlier prototypes, since it reflects the improved performance now available from long length HTS wires.
 This motor marks a milestone in Reliance Electric's program to develop commercial motors using HTS technology.
 The synchronous motor construction with Superconducting field coils is an engineering prototype of the same type of construction planned for larger synchronous motors (1,000 to 10,000 HP) that may be utilized for industrial applications. Widespread use of HTS coils in large industrial motors has the potential for substantial energy savings, since superconductors can transmit electrical current with virtually no resistance and since their use will result in significant reductions in the size of large industrial motors.
 The Reliance Electric Company superconducting motor project is being sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute.

 American Superconductor, Watertown, Mass., is dedicated to the development of commercially viable applications of high temperature superconductor technology. The company creates and develops materials and manufacturing processes for making flexible high temperature ceramic Superconducting wires, wire products and systems.
