 RELIANCE ELECTRIC'S FIBER-IN-THE-LOOP SYSTEM
 SELECTED FOR USE IN BELLSOUTH
CLEVELAND, Aug. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- BellSouth Telecommunications, Inc. (NYSE: BLS) has selected Reliance Comm/Tec Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Electric Company (NYSE: REE) as a primary vendor for "Fiber-in-the-Loop" applications utilizing its DISC*S system.
BellSouth plans to initiate deployment of the DISC*S Fiber-in-the- Loop system for First Office Applications in Louisville, Ky., Greenville, S.C. and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Over the three-year period, BellSouth projects that approximately 15,000 Optical Network units will be ordered from Reliance Comm/Tec. Terms of the contract agreement were not disclosed.
"We're very pleased to be working with BellSouth to increase the quality and capacity of its network, providing new revenue-generating opportunities," said Walter M. Miller, vice president and general manager of Reliance Comm/Tec's transmissions systems business. "We feel the DISC*S Fiber-in-the-Loop system is among the most forward-looking developments in the telecommunications marketplace, and Bellsouth's election of our system certainly is further evidence of this confidence."
The First Office Application in BellSouth will feature both new build and rehabilitated sites. "Most important, the system selected will allow BellSouth to deploy fiber in the loop as an economical alternative to copper," said George R. Stiglich, general manager for Reliance Comm/Tec Access Electronics.
An industry leader in Fiber-in-the-Loop technology, Reliance Comm/Tec offers a broad line of power systems and outside plant enclosures to support its DISC*S Fiber-in-the-Loop product. Chief among the enclosures is its CAD-12 pedestal optical network unit, in which BellSouth is interested. "The advantage of the CAD-12 is that it's a highly reliable enclosure the operating companies already are very familiar with," said Stiglich.
The most widely deployed next-generation loop carrier in the industry, Reliance Comm/Tec's original DISC*S product, introduced in 1988, currently has an installed capacity base of more than 400,000 lines in six Regional Bell Operating Companies and a number of independent telephone companies.
Reliance Comm/Tec Corporation is a recognized leader in local loop products and services, offering advanced technologies to the telecommunications industry worldwide. The company specializes in power, transmission, outside plant, central office and systems integration capabilities and engineering and installation services. Reliance Comm/Tec is a wholly owned subsidiary of Reliance Electric Company.
