2 Fitchburg State freshmen honored

FITCHBURG - Two Fitchburg State College freshmen were among 48 students chosen for the statewide 2007 Tsongas Scholarship Program.

Amanda Roche, an education major, and Corey Majeau, a film major, were honored at a Statehouse ceremony this month.

"We have worked very hard to get to this point," Ms. Roche said in a press release issued by the college. "We must remember that this scholarship allows us to be what we choose. It allows us the path to success."

Mr. Majeau said he was looking forward to spending less time worrying about money and more time concentrating on academics.

The program, named for the late Paul E. Tsongas, a Democratic senator from Lowell, is meant to give full scholarships to students with a 3.75 grade point average and who are ranked in the top 10 percent of their classes. The scholarships pay up to $5,300 per year for tuition at one of nine state colleges.

"The mission (of state colleges) is about students. It is a mission that supports students' academic endeavors," said Fitchburg State President Robert V. Antonucci. "We make sure that our students get the most out of their education."

Program representatives said that Mr. Tsongas held a strong belief that public colleges and universities were important to providing citizens access to academic excellence. Mr. Tsongas once served as chair of the Massachusetts Board of Regents of Higher Education, the precursor to today's Board of Higher Education. He also was the deputy assistant attorney general, a Lowell city councilor, representative in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. senator. In 1991, Tsongas was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.
