Realty to pay $6K DEP fine

CHARLTON - The owner of land at 299 Worcester Road recently signed a consent order with the state to resolve violations of the Wetlands Protection Act.

The owner, Charlton Route 20 Realty Inc. of Shrewsbury, will pay a $6,000 penalty to the state, the Department of Environmental Protection said this week.

Another company, JM Environmental Corp., bulldozed and deposited fill material containing large pieces of concrete and asphalt into vegetative wetlands on the property. The violation was observed by the DEP in May 2007.

A unilateral administrative order was issued to Charlton Route 20 Realty Inc., requiring that all work cease and corrective actions be taken, the DEP said.

Charlton Route 20 Realty Inc. agreed to implement and maintain an approved erosion and sedimentation control plan to stabilize the site. It also will complete all permanent slope stabilization and remove all solid waste materials at the site, the state said.

JM Environmental Corp. is responsible for the vegetative regeneration of the wetlands resource areas, and it will hire a wetlands specialist to monitor all wetlands restoration work, the DEP said.

Scam targets bank customers

STURBRIDGE - Police yesterday received several calls from residents complaining about a scam that apparently has targeted customers of two local banks.

The Sturbridge Police Department issued a warning yesterday asking the public to be aware of the scam. Residents received telephone calls from an automated system that identifies itself as being with either the Southbridge Credit Union or the Sturbridge Credit Union. Residents are asked to enter or provide their ATM, debit or credit card information. Police say the calls are not legitimate and they are in no way affiliated with any financial institution. Residents are cautioned not to provide any type of information to telephone callers. They also are asked to notify the Sturbridge Police at (508) 347-2525 or their local police department if they get such a call. Police say the calls register on caller IDs as being unavailable numbers. Police say no one has yet reported a financial loss.
