REGGIE JACKSON SETS ANOTHER RECORD ON HIS WAY TO THE HALL OF FAME

Only Person To Twice Have A National Candy Bar Carry His Name
WASHINGTON, July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Baseball superstar Reggie Jackson continues to add to his legend and perhaps has established a record that truly may never be broken by another person.
Jackson joined the Clark Candy Company and The Upper Deck Company at the American Wholesale Marketers Association (AWMA) Convention and National Candy Show in announcing the Reggie(TM) bar -- honoring Jackson's upcoming induction into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame.
At a media briefing at the Washington Convention Center, Jackson told reporters that while most sports records are made to be broken, he agrees that he may have achieved an unbreakable mark.
"Before I joined the New York Yankees I said if I played in New York I'd have a candy bar named after me," said Jackson. "Well, that happened in 1978, but I never dreamed that I would end up with two candy bars."
Clark Candy -- makers of the famous Clark(R) bar -- and The Upper Deck Company -- makers of sports and collectible trading cards -- have teamed to create a unique product to honor Jackson's Hall of Fame induction on Aug. 1, 1993.
Each Reggie(TM) bar will contain one of three limited edition, collector-series Upper Deck(R) cards. The cards are identical to the Upper Deck(R) regular series cards including the Upper Deck(R) hologram.
"The success of the first Reggie(TM) bar, the involvement of a high quality company in Upper Deck and the national notoriety of Reggie Jackson all combine to create a unique marketing situation that we believe will be very successful," said Ty Ballou, vice president, sales and marketing, for Clark. "We've discussed the Reggie(TM) bar with many of our wholesalers and distributors and all of them have been very enthusiastic about the product and its sales potential."
The Reggie(TM) bar consists of a creamy smooth peanut butter center surrounded by whole roasted peanuts and coated in pure milk chocolate. The bar will be shipped for retail sale the week of Aug. 23.
"This certainly is going to be a couple of very exciting months for me, with my Hall of Fame induction, retirement of my number by the Yankees and the introduction of the Reggie(TM) bar," said Jackson. "It's gratifying to know that people appreciated my hard work and dedication to the game of baseball and I appreciate all the support I've received over the years."
Ballou said he believes the Reggie(TM) bar will do very well in both Major League Baseball markets and nationally because of the combination of Jackson's appeal and feats as a ball player and the limited edition, collector-series Upper Deck(R) cards.
"Generally, when a trading card is included in a product it's of marginal value," said Ballou. "But there's no question that the Upper Deck(R) three-card limited-edition Reggie Jackson Hall of Fame set will be added to card collections, and possibly even find its way to the trading, selling and buying market someday."
The Reggie(TM) bar is the third sports-related candy product produced by the Clark Candy Company. A limited-edition Clark(R) bar honoring the back-to-back Stanley Cup championships by the Pittsburgh Penguins was introduced in June of last year, and the Mario Bun(TM) bar, named for Penguin superstar Mario Lemieux, was introduced in March of this year.
