REF GIFTS IT TO KOP; CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SPECIAL Champions Lge Group D.
STEVEN GERRARD saved Liverpool last night with a dramatic stoppagetime penalty at Anfield.
The Reds were heading for their second successive defeat when referee Martin Hansson pointed to the spot in the third minute of stoppage time after Mariano Pernia crashed into Gerrard. The decision looked a shocker, but Gerrard dispatched the spot-kick for another late escape by the Reds.
Gerrard said: "I'm not sure it was a penalty, but I got there first and he went into the back of me."
Hansson had earlier waved away two far stronger appeals - one in the opening minutes when Daniel Agger's legs were taken from behind by Maniche.
The second when Atletico's Luis Perea clearly handled the ball under pressure from Robbie Keane. The draw means Liverpool slip to second in Group D on goal difference.
