REEBOK AND RUSSIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE SIGN SPONSORSHIP AGREEMENT; RUSSIAN ATHLETES TO COMPETE IN REEBOK FOOTWEAR AND APPAREL

STOUGHTON, Mass., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Reebok International Ltd. (NYSE: RBK) and the Russian Olympic Committee today announced a multi-year sponsorship agreement for Russian athletes to train and compete in Reebok performance footwear and apparel. The sponsorship includes agreements with 20 Russian sports federations, including track & field, basketball, soccer, gymnastics and team handball.
"This is an historic sponsorship agreement," said Paul Fireman, chairman and chief executive officer of Reebok. "Russian athletes have been enormously successful and the Russian Olympic Committee is entering a new era in which more victories are expected. Reebok is proud to join with the Russian Olympic Committee, its coaches, trainers and athletes in furthering the development of sports in Russia," he said.
"Sponsoring the Russian Olympic team is a key element of our global strategy and will help us reach our goal to be the dominant performance sports and fitness brand worldwide by 1995," said Fireman. "Russia and Eastern Europe represent significant markets for Reebok products. With Russia's leading athletes competing in Reebok and the brand becoming highly visible throughout the Republic, we expect people will develop a strong attachment to Reebok," Fireman said.
"The Reebok brand is known and respected throughout the world" said Vitaly Smirnov, president of the Russian Olympic Committee. "Reebok has demonstrated its commitment to developing the most advanced athletic footwear technologies, and our athletes are looking forward to training and competing in Reebok products at world and European championship events and the Olympic Games," he said.
The sponsorship agreement with the Russian Olympic Committee coincides with Reebok's global introduction of a performance sports logo. The logo will appear prominently on Reebok footwear and apparel giving the brand greater visibility at major sports competitions.
The logo is expected to debut on uniforms Reebok is designing for Russia's national soccer team. The Russian team will play exhibition matches against the U.S. national team next month in Florida and California. Russia's track and field team also will compete in Reebok footwear and apparel in March at the World Indoor Championships in Toronto and World Championships in Stuttgart in August.
At the 1992 Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona, athletes from the Commonwealth of Independent States won more than 100 medals. Approximately 80-percent of those medals were won by Russian athletes.
"An important part of Reebok's product design and development process is working with leading athletes and coaches throughout the world," said Roberto Muller, president of Reebok's Sports Division, who was in Moscow to sign the agreement with the Russian Olympic Committee.
In addition to the new sponsorship agreement with the Olympic Committee, Reebok's presence in Russia will include a concept store which is scheduled to open in Moscow this Spring. Reebok products also will be available through the Olympic Shops which will be opening this year throughout the Republic of Russia.
