RED LOBSTER: JOE LEE TO RECEIVE 'LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD' FROM FLORIDA RESTAURANT ASSOCIATION

ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Joe R. Lee, vice chairman of General Mills, Inc., and a guiding force behind the success of Orlando- based Red Lobster restaurants, will be given a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Florida Restaurant Association Saturday evening, Aug. 28, in the Crystal Ballroom of the Stouffer Orlando Resort.
Lee, a longtime resident and civic leader of Orlando, will receive the award, which was recently created by the association to recognize outstanding contributions to the food service industry.
"No one better symbolizes the meaning of this award than Joe Lee," said M.J. Mighdoll, executive vice president, Florida Restaurant Association. "Joe's entire career can be summed up with one word: Quality. He has always been committed to providing quality foods, made and served by quality people. His unwavering adherence to this concept has benefited both his company and millions of satisfied consumers," he added.
Lee, a protege of legendary restaurateur Bill Darden, of Orlando, the founder of Red Lobster, was one of Darden's original managers in Lakeland, Fla., site of the first restaurant, which opened 25 years ago.
A Red Lobster supervisor when the company was purchased by General Mills in 1970, Lee combined his nuts-and-bolts knowledge of the restaurant business with the marketing muscle of General Mills to forge the restaurant's growth strategy.
In 1972 he was named president and chief executive officer of Red Lobster. Industry experts credit Lee with providing the vision that has guided Red Lobster's growth from a single seafood restaurant in Florida to the nation's largest seafood dinnerhouse chain, with stores in 46 states and Canada.
In 1979, after a three-year stint as a General Mills vice president, Lee was named president of General Mills Restaurants, which includes Red Lobster, The Olive Garden and China Coast restaurants.
A member of General Mills' board of directors since 1985, Lee now serves as vice chairman of General Mills. His current responsibilities include Betty Crocker products, Gold Medal, Gorton's Technology and Operations, Marketing Services and Communications.
