RED CROSS RECOGNIZES AMOCO'S RELIEF EFFORTS WITH FIRST ILLINOIS CORPORATE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

SPRINGFIELD, Ill., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- How does the Mid-America Chapter of the Red Cross spell relief? A-M-O-C-O.
It was the chapter's nomination that resulted in Amoco Corporation being named the first recipient of the Red Cross Corporate Achievement Award for Illinois. The award will be presented tomorrow in Springfield by the Illinois State Consortia of the American Red Cross. It recognizes Amoco's support of Red Cross programs ranging from disaster preparedness education to relief efforts during the Midwest floods and Hurricane Andrew.
Accepting the award on behalf of Amoco will be Chuck Woodbeck, district manager for Amoco Oil Company's marketing area that encompasses southern Illinois, Iowa, and Missouri -- states hardest hit by record floods this past summer.
"The Corporate Achievement Award for Illinois truly belongs to the employees of Amoco. Their commitment to their home communities and their caring for neighbors whether next door or hundreds of miles away is what exemplifies Amoco's people value," said Woodbeck.
"The Mid-America Chapter enthusiastically nominated Amoco for this prestigious award for its consistent, generous support of national and local Red Cross programs," said Bill Berry, National Red Cross chairman of volunteers. Berry will preside over the awards ceremony.
During 1993, Amoco's significant contributions to the Red Cross have included $200,000 and thousands of gallons of gasoline to the flood relief activities along the swollen Mississippi and Missouri Rivers and $15,000 to the Mid-America Chapter for fire prevention education in Chicago.
In 1992, Amoco donated $200,000 to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief Fund, which included relief efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew and $25,000 for a disaster preparedness project that targets the general public, schools, and industry.
Chicago-based Amoco is one of the world's leading oil, chemical, and natural gas companies.
