RECORD-SETTING AMAZON FISH SHIPMENT ARRIVES IN CLEVELAND

CLEVELAND, March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The largest shipment of Amazon fish ever imported into the United States -- about 8,000 pounds -- will arrive here Tuesday, March 23, on its way to some of the area's top restaurants and specialty seafood markets where the first-ever shipment sold out in record time in January.
And for the time being, Cleveland will continue to be the only city in the country where the fish are generally available.
"We've received an incredible amount of interest from some of the top restaurants in America, especially from several in New York City," explained local entrepreneur Jeffrey A. Moats, "but right now, we're concentrating our marketing in the Cleveland area and nowhere else in the country."
Moats, who "discovered" the fish from the remote reaches of the Amazon on a business trip there last year, will be on hand Tuesday when the fish complete the nearly 4,000-mile trek and arrive by truck at the Navillus Gourmet Fish Co., 5221 Lorain Ave., Cleveland. It will be distributed by SYSCO Food Services of Cleveland, Inc., headquartered in Bedford Heights.
The shipment will include huge loins from the 400-pound air- breathing Pirarucu, and thousands of milk-white fillets from the Tucunare, one of the most abundant species in the three-million-square- mile Brazilian rainforest.
The fish became a spectacular success when Moats introduced them at some of Cleveland's most exclusive restaurants last October and November. A test-market first shipment sold out in a matter of weeks.
Moats recently returned from a three-week mission to Brazil where he signed agreements that will ensure a steady -- and hopefully growing -- supply of this exotic fare.
