RECORD CONTRIBUTIONS TO ENERGYSHARE HELP MORE THAN 18,000 PEOPLE

RICHMOND, Va., May 28 /PRNewswire/ -- With contributions exceeding $1 million for the first time ever, EnergyShare helped more than 18,000 people in 1992-93.
This year customers, Virginia Power employees and EnergyShare partners gave nearly $1.1 million to Virginia Power's winter fuel assistance program. Virginia Power sponsors EnergyShare to help people who are facing financial hardships and are unable to heat their homes. EnergyShare pays any energy bill -- coal, electricity, gas, kerosene, oil or wood. The 1992-93 program, which marked EnergyShare's 10th anniversary, ends today.
Overall, contributions were up 21 percent. Customer giving to EnergyShare increased by 26 percent during the 1992-93 heating season. Contributions from Virginia Power employees increased 28 percent, and EnergyShare partner donations increased by 1 percent.
"When the weather turns warm, it's easy to forget how harsh the winter can be for those in need. Fortunately, our customers and employees continue to give to EnergyShare year-round," said James T. Rhodes, Virginia Power's president and chief executive officer. "We thank them for their generosity and continuing support of the program."
For its 10th anniversary, EnergyShare distributed more than 700 "Light Packs" to EnergyShare recipients age 60 and older. The Light Packs included energy-efficient light bulbs, energy-saving tips and information on Virginia Power programs for senior citizens. The program was so well-received that it will be continued in October 1993, when the 1993-94 EnergyShare program begins.
During the past heating season, EnergyShare served more than 3,300 children under 5 years of age, nearly 900 adults over age 60 and more than 1,200 disabled persons. About 3,300 people could not be assisted because EnergyShare ran out of money. The 70 health and social service agencies in the Virginia Power service area administering EnergyShare reported receiving more than 7,000 applications.
Customers contribute through electric bill overpayments in specific amounts or by using an EnergyShare envelope to mail a check in any amount. Contributions also come from businesses and organizations serving as EnergyShare partners and employees of Virginia Power and its parent company, Dominion Resources, Inc. (NYSE: D).
Virginia Power contributed $68,000 to local non-profit agencies to help cover costs of administering EnergyShare. The company also contributed $50,000 in matching funds to help pay Virginia Power bills.
This is the first year that customers can contribute to EnergyShare year-round through bill overpayments. To do so, customers can simply overpay their Virginia Power bills by exactly $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $25 or $35. Year-round contributions can also be made by writing a check to the program in any amount and mailing it to EnergyShare, P.O. Box 12083, Richmond, Va., 23241. Contributions are tax-deductible.
