THIS WEEK: 1956 VOLKWAGEN BEETLE

I'M going old school again this week but when I say old school I'm going way back, right back to 1956 to be precise. This beautiful Beetle belongs to Ben Lawrence and he bought it in back in 2001.

The Bug had been sitting in a barn in Sweden since 1973. He dragged it out originally to buy for his wife but when he got it home he decided to modify it a bit but without touching the bodywork.

A gearbox change was first on the cards for Ben so he fitted an IRS GT box with welded shift forks and heavy duty sideplates.

He had some wheels made by an American company called ERCO who make drag race wheels, These are streetweight spun aluminium and are so light you can lift them with your finger.

Hepurchased an L series longblock from a friend. Originally a 54hp 1600, the motor has now been bored to 94mm and stroked to 82mm and is now 2276cc.

The engine spec is as follows: Camshaft is an FK8 with 1.4-1 Autocraft rockers, reworked Porsche rods, CNC Wedgeport cylinder heads, forged Mahle cylinders, forged notched pistons, dual weber 44 IDF carbs, CB performance rotary fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator, deep sump, custom sidewinder exhaust. BHP is approx 160bhp.

Other mods include autometer guages, Gene Berg quickshift kit and shifter. Future plans include a line loc, 4 puck clutch, change of wheels, T bars bumpers and upgrade to discs brakes.
