RE-DISCOVER 'AMERICA' AT EPCOT CENTER; AMERICAN ADVENTURE UPDATED IN FORM AND SUBSTANCE

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla., Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- It's 350 years of history in just a half hour. The Epcot Center American Adventure, sponsored by American Express and Coca-Cola, has been updated to reflect our nation's most recent decade -- and the latest in Disney magic.
While the attraction, housed in a 108,000-square-foot, Georgian- style "mansion," has been praised by millions of Walt Disney World guests during its first decade and has hosted world leaders and United States Presidents, theme park leaders wanted to take the park's most elaborate AUDIO-ANIMATRONICS(R) program to the next level.
"It's always been a very popular show," said Epcot Center Vice President Greg Emmer. "But we've done a whole of upgrading -- and it's better than ever!"
Multi-media effects of The American Adventure have been overhauled to enhance the experience for each person who visits the 1,024-seat theater. Key AUDIO-ANIMATRONICS(R) figures have been replaced, audio re-recorded and visual images added.
"The addition of the new technology will dramatically enhance the overall show!" said Rick Rothschild, who not only served as director of the original show, but also spearheaded the rehabilitation.
One of the major elements in the rejuvenation is the replacement of four of the featured AUDIO-ANIMATRONICS(R) performers with Disney's latest version of figure technology. Susan B. Anthony, Will Rogers, Mark Twain and Ben Franklin figures are all more lifelike than ever before.
"It's the same as featured previously with the "Wicked Witch" in the Great Movie Ride (at the Disney-MGM Studios Theme Park)," Rothschild said.
Another of the enhancements to the show involved production of a completely new filmed "Golden Dreams" sequence. The montage of images, featured near the end of the show, encompasses events from 1945 through the present. The previous compilation, produced for the opening of Epcot Center has been lengthened to include an additional 12 years of scenes. Notable additions are Ryan White, the young hemophiliac who succumbed to AIDS after a courageous battle with the disease, Muppet creator Jim Henson and basketball star Earvin "Magic" Johnson. In addition to the new individuals chosen, the dream-like quality of the environment that surrounds the key images has been newly created, as has the final shot of the Statue of Liberty that ends the sequence.
In order to produce that new film section, additional vocals have been added to the original duet which, according to Rothschild, "has become a Disney classic.
"We've re-recorded the vocals," he said, "using the voices of Richard Page (our original male voice) and Siedah Garrett (a featured vocalist on Michael Jackson's 'Bad' album.)"
All of the improvements in the All American spectacle will be in place in time for President's Day. The new-and-improved attraction will re-open officially Feb. 12.
President's day weekend is also Valentine's weekend, and the kick- off to Splashtacular Saturdays...with extended Saturday hours at the Magic Kingdom and special savings on Disney resort accommodations.
Beginning Feb. 14, Disney will offer special All-American savings. Accommodations at The Disney Inn, Disney's Contemporary Resort, Disney's Fort Wilderness Homes and Disney's Village Resort will be available at 30 percent off regular rates. In addition, guests can save 25 percent on lodging at Disney's Yacht and Beach Club Resorts and Disney Vacation Club. For more information, call 407-827-7200 or a travel agent.
