RDI Computer introduces the RUGGEDIZED PowerLite; the first 110-MHz SPARC-based portable workstation for government and industrial use.

CARLSBAD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 1995--Portable workstation pioneer RDI Computer Corp. Tuesday introduced the RUGGEDIZED PowerLite, the first 110-MHz SPARC-based portable workstation to combine workstation features with expansion capabilities in one self-contained, ruggedized unit.

The RUGGEDIZED PowerLite is multi-mission capable, allowing mobile users to expand and configure its functionality without the need for additional peripheral expansion units. The smooth integration of the unit's extensive feature set in one unit offers maximum flexibility, expandability, and mobility for the demanding requirements of the government and industrial markets.

Unlike comparable products weighing in at 50-60 pounds and requiring multiple cases, the RUGGEDIZED PowerLite is fully encased in a single 30-pound, shock-resistant, waterproof custom aluminum alloy case measuring 7.5x15.5x19.5 inches. Built for use in the toughest environments, the RUGGEDIZED PowerLite meets military standard specification, MIL-STD 810E, for shock absorption.

The case also uses constant torque hinges with stay latches and the upper portion provides top and side sun shielding for the LCD. The system's trackball and full-size removable keyboard are sealed with a durable membrane for protection from such damaging elements as sand, dust, and moisture. To provide reliable cooling, the RUGGEDIZED Powerlite features two cooling fans with removable filters for easy cleaning.

Powered by the 110-MHz microSPARC II microprocessor with performance ratings of 77 SPECint92 and 65.3 SPECfp92, the RUGGEDIZED PowerLite offers extensive features including up to 4.3 GB of removable hard disk storage capacity, TGX graphics acceleration, a single 3.5-inch 720 KB/1.44 MB low profile internal floppy disk drive, fax modem, a 10.4-inch, 1024x768 high-resolution flat panel color display, or a Colorplus 640x480 active matrix LCD, memory configurations of 32 to 128MB, and an optional CD-ROM drive and/or a Digital Audio Tape (DAT).

In its base configuration, the RUGGEDIZED PowerLite also features a three-button, integrated trackball and full-size, 104-key, 15 function Sun-4 or Sun-5 compatible removable keyboard.

"For the first time, government and industrial users have the same power and features currently available for commercial users, in a single, ruggedized unit designed to be easily transported around the world and operated under harsh environmental conditions," said Frank Smaldino, vice president of sales, RDI.

The RUGGEDIZED PowerLite's exceptional combination of components and features allows mobile users to perform system-intensive applications, such as correlating data from large integrated databases, processing, displaying, and manipulating tactical imagery, GIS and meteorological data, or developing complex command and control measures in the field.

The RUGGEDIZED PowerLite also supports deployed command, control, communications, and information (C3I) applications and special operation missions in the field, on board ship, and in airborne environments.

For additional flexibility, expandability, and portability, the RUGGEDIZED Powerlite offers a number of software and hardware solutions. RDI's mobile computing software, Virtual Workgroup Architecture (VWA), provides a set of tools for automatic network connection, fax, and system management.

The unit includes standard workstation interfaces and a PCMCIA expansion slot that supports one or two Type I and Type II cards, or one Type III card.

The RUGGEDIZED PowerLite includes a standard 10BASE-T AUI interface for Ethernet connection; a 10-MB/sec SCSI-2 port (synchronous); two RS-232C serial ports; a Centronics-compatible parallel port; 8-bit audio connection (with internal speaker and microphone); a 13W3 D-type connector for an external monitor; and Sbus expansion slots.

For added flexibility in the field, the RUGGEDIZED Powerlite includes an internal AC and DC adapter with a double pole circuit breaker for power surge protection. In addition, the RUGGEDIZED PowerLite's battery pack provides uninterrupted power supply in the event of power surges or fluctuations from the power source.

Providing 100 percent compatibility with the Sun OS and Solaris applications, the RUGGEDIZED PowerLite is available with the Solaris 1.1.2 or Solaris 2.4 operating system.

To meet the rugged demands of all types of environmental conditions, the RUGGEDIZED PowerLite is fully operational at altitudes of -1,300 feet up to 10,000 feet, in temperatures ranging from 32 degrees F to 122 degrees F (0 to +50 C), and in humidity measured at 10 percent to 90 percent non-condensing.

The RUGGEDIZED PowerLite is available through Sun Federal and Government System Integrators worldwide. "We are delighted to add the RDI 110-MHz SPARC-based portable RUGGEDIZED PowerLite workstation to our Sun Federal Third Party Offering (S3PO) program. This product will have special appeal to government field end users worldwide," said John Marselle, president of Sun Microsystems Federal Inc.

Single unit pricing starts at $24,495. Every RUGGEDIZED PowerLite is backed by a 90-day warranty and is serviced and supported by RDI's headquarters customer support center in Carlsbad, Calif.

The RUGGEDIZED PowerLite complements RDI's family of commercial notebook workstations, the PowerLite 110, 85 and 50. The RUGGEDIZED PowerLite and the PowerLite product line of notebook workstations are the only family of commercial and ruggedized portable workstations available from one vendor.

RDI Computer Corp. designs, develops, manufactures, and distributes a diverse line of portable Sun SPARC-based workstations. RDI's products balance the power of full desktop workstation functionality with the flexibility of mobile computing.
