RCN LAUNCHES MEGAMODEM HIGHSPEED INTERNET SERVICE IN CA.

RCN Corporation (NASDAQ:RCNC) has launched a new "super-charged" high-speed Internet service in its San Francisco and Los Angeles markets. Known as MegaModem, it enables RCN's California customers to access the Internet at download speeds of up to 3 megabytes per second (Mbps), double the company's standard downstream speeds of up to 1.5 Mbps, and up to twice as fast as competing cable modem and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) services.

The faster speeds enable consumers to download many popular Web applications more quickly and easily. For example, users can download MP3 music files and other Web-based forms of entertainment, such as movie trailers and streaming video, in as little as half the time it would take with a standard 1.5 Mbps cable modem or DSL connection.

"Our engineers worked diligently to find a way to more fully utilize the power and capacity of our fiber-optic network to make MegaModem one of the fastest residential Internet services on the market today," said David C. McCourt, RCN's chairman and CEO. "While other broadband providers are limiting their download speeds or cracking down on so-called bandwidth hogs, we've been working to give our customers even faster speeds at a terrific value. The launch of MegaModem is a key example of RCN's commitment to innovate and deliver the best value and highest-quality service to our customers."

New and existing RCN California customers who subscribe to the company's Gold and Platinum ResiLink bundled packages are now receiving the enhanced cable modem service as a standard package feature. This makes RCN one of the only broadband providers in the country to offer a 3 Mbps downstream service as part of a bundled product offering, for no additional charge.

San Francisco and Los Angeles customers who subscribe to RCN's Mercury and Bronze ResiLink bundled packages and the Company's New RCN Essentials product can upgrade to the MegaModem service for an additional $10 per month, while a la carte customers can upgrade for an additional $25 monthly charge.

"Consumers today are demanding faster and more efficient Internet service and none of our local competitors can offer this kind of speed at this price," McCourt continued.

"MegaModem is a great way for us to enhance the value of our bundled communications products, increase our average revenue and average services per customer, and prove that we're a leader in delivering the services our customers want."

RCN's Gold and Platinum ResiLink packages include high-speed Internet, fully-featured phone and premium digital cable TV service. The Bronze package includes local phone and high-speed Internet, while Mercury offers high-speed Internet bundled with premium cable TV. RCN Essentials offers a core set of communications services, including phone, cable TV and high-speed Internet. Essentials customers can add on additional features and premium services to build the bundle that best meets their needs.

With today's launch, more than 100,000 marketable homes in RCN's San Francisco and Los Angeles service areas have access to the company's MegaModem service.
