RCN INTRODUCES MEGAMODEM HIGH-SPEED INTERNET SERVICE.
With speeds twice as fast as regular high-speed Internet and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) services, RCN's MegaModem service makes Internet surfing and downloading a more enjoyable experience for consumers. They can download movie videos, MP3 music files and other Web-based forms of entertainment in as little as half the time it would take with a standard 1.5 Mbps cable modem or DSL connection.
"MegaModem has been heralded as a real enhancement by RCN customers as they experience what 3 Mbps of speed means in terms of a faster, more reliable Internet connection," said David C. McCourt, RCN's chairman and CEO. "Our robust, high-capacity fiber network enables us to easily expand bandwidth to our customers with little incremental cost to the Company."
MegaModem service is included for customers of RCN's bundled ResiLink Platinum and Gold packages. New and existing RCN customers who subscribe to the company's Gold and Platinum ResiLink bundled packages are being automatically upgraded to the new faster speeds. Other RCN customers can upgrade for a low additional monthly charge.
"None of our local competitors offer this kind of speed at this price," said Pati Ross, RCN's Senior vice president-sales and marketing. "It's one more way we are striving to make the RCN bundles more valuable, particularly to customers who subscribe to our best packages."
RCN first launched its MegaModem service to 100,000 homes in the company's San Francisco and Los Angeles markets in July 2002. This was followed by introduction of the service in Boston and Philadelphia in December of 2002.
