RAYTHEON WINS NAVY CONTRACT TO UPGRADE SIDEWINDER MISSILES

LEXINGTON, Mass., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Navy's Naval Air Systems Command has awarded a $9.1 million contract to Raytheon Company's (NYSE: RTN) Missile Systems Division to produce 1,100 upgraded guidance control sections for Navy and Air Force Sidewinder Missiles.
The Air Force has procured an additional 200 kits for depot installation. The upgraded units will be identified as the AIM-9M-8/9 Block Upgrade.
The contract calls for the fabrication, assembly, inspection, and test of retrofit kits and the installation of those kits into AIM-9M guidance sections. The kits will improve the missile's ability to resist enemy countermeasure activity.
"As the industrial support contractor for AIM-9M," said James S. Wilson, manager of Short Range Air-To-Air Missile Programs, "we have worked closely with the Navy to ensure the success of this retrofit program. We're pleased that the Navy has chosen Raytheon to help improve Sidewinder's countermeasures capability."
The retrofit kits will be produced and installed at Raytheon's Missile Systems Division plant in Lowell, Mass. Deliveries will begin in July 1994.
The contract, which represents 100% of a competitively bid procurement, is the first covering the manufacture and installation of the upgrade kits. The Navy and Air Force, joint sponsors of the program, intend to upgrade a major portion of their inventory over the next several years.
Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is a diversified, international, $9 billion technology company with sales in four business segments: Electronics, Aircraft Products, Energy and Environmental, and Major Appliances.
