RAYTHEON SAYS LATEST SAUDI ORDER REINFORCES PATRIOT'S DETERRENCE VALUE
LEXINGTON, Mass., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) today indicated that a Saudi Arabian request for additional Patriot fire units both reaffirms the system's strategic value and promises to have a significant economic impact on the Massachusetts- based manufacturer.
William H. Swanson, senior vice president and general manager of Raytheon's Missile Systems Division, said the order, should it win Congressional approval, "will add continuity to Patriot production into 1995, providing a solid base for future domestic and international sales."
The Department of Defense initiated the requisite 20-day informal notification period to Congress yesterday for the sale of 14 additional fire units and 758 Patriot missiles. The estimated value of the sale, including U.S. government furnished hardware and services, is $3.3 billion.
The prospective sale would supplement the late 1990 sale of eight Patriot fire units and 300 missiles to the Saudis.
During Desert Shield/Desert Storm, the U.S. deployed 21 Patriot fire units to the Middle East to cover the northern portion of Saudi Arabia. Eleven additional fire units were deployed by the U.S. and The Netherlands to Israel and Turkey.
"The wisdom of deploying Patriot was vividly demonstrated to the world on nightly television," Swanson said, "as Patriot saved lives, protected vital Coalition assets, and stabilized the region by helping to keep Israel from entering the conflict.
"More recently, when Iraq detained U.N. inspectors," he added, "Saudi Arabia reiterated its confidence in Patriot by asking the U.S. to deploy fire units again to protect the Kingdom."
Beside defense electronics, Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is active in aviation, appliances, energy and environmental services, construction and publishing. It recorded sales of $9.3 billion in 1990.
