RAYTHEON JOINS TEAM TO DEVELOP HIGH SPEED TRAINS FOR AMTRAK

LEXINGTON, Mass., Oct. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN), intent on pursuing new initiatives in the transportation industry, has joined other well-known US firms in the production of the X2000 high speed tilt train for use by Amtrak.
Raytheon, General Electric (NYSE: GE), and General Dynamics (NYSE: GD) will join ABB Traction Inc. in a venture scheduled to come to fruition with the deployment of 26 trains for operation in the Northeast Corridor between Boston and Washington, D.C., in early 1997.
Raytheon will manufacture and assemble control electronics and coach trucks, and will design and build food service cars for the high speed trains. GE Transportation Systems will build locomotives, and General Dynamics Land Systems Division will procure components, develop and manage a supplier network, and supervise manufacturing techniques.
The X2000 tilt train was developed by ABB's Swedish affiliate, ABB Traction AB, in cooperation with Swedish State Railways. The train has been operating daily in Sweden for the past three years.
For Raytheon, the high speed rail venture is one of a series of initiatives designed to establish the company as a significant presence in the
transportation industry. In one such program, Raytheon was selected earlier this year to develop a personal rapid transit system for the Northern Illinois Regional Transportation Authority, which plans to install the system in the suburban community of Rosemont, Ill.
In another program, the company has been selected by the Federal Highway Administration to analyze an automated highway system calculated to provide more efficient use of the nation's highways.
Commenting on the automated highway project, Vice President Stephen R. Stanvick said Raytheon welcomes the opportunity to help develop solutions to the nation's growing traffic problems.
"We intend to play an important role in the development and delivery of new transportation systems for the 21st century," Stanvick declared.
Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is a diversified, $9 billion technology company with sales in four business segments: Electronics, Aviation Products, Energy and Environmental Services, and Major Appliances.
