 RAYTHEON DIVISION WINS GERMAN AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL CONTRACT
 LEXINGTON, Mass., June 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) has been awarded a $23.6 million contract by the German Federal Administration of Air Navigation Services for the development and delivery of a new air traffic control (ATC) automation system.
 The system, labeled DERD-XL, will provide enroute radar data processing and display services for the Berlin flight information region, as well as terminal control for the tower control facilities at Berlin's Tempelhof, Tegel, and Schoenefeld Airports.
 Raytheon is installing additional systems at a new approach control/tower facility at Frankfurt am Main Airport and at a software development and test facility in Frankfurt.
 The contract, to implemented at Raytheon's Equipment Division facility in Marlboro, Mass., continues and enhances more than a decade of successful DERD activities for Germany. The Lexington, Mass.-based company is also installing an ATC system in Norway and and has been selected to provide a new system in The Netherlands.
 Citing "our proven experience on major systems around the world," Walter H. Stowell, vice president and general manager of the Equipment Division, said the DERD contract "will reinforce Raytheon's leadership in ATC technology and advanced systems."
 DERD-XL will feature open system architecture with off-the-shelf UNIX computer platforms. The radar will be presented on high resolution raster displays. Color units will be used for the enroute, approach, and departure control positions, while high brightness monochrome displays will be furnished for the airport towers.
 The contract calls for a total of 72 display systems, and communication between the host computer complex and the display subsystem will be accomplished through a state-of-the-art fiber distributed data interface local area network.
 Installation at the Berlin facilities is expected to begin late next year, and contract completion is scheduled for July 1994.
 Raytheon is a $9.3 billion, technology-based international company with sales in four business segments: electronics, aircraft products, environmental and energy, and major appliances.
