RAYTHEON DIVISION AWARDED $77 MILLION AIR FORCE CONTRACT

GOLETA, Calif. Jan. 27 /PRNewswire/ - The U.S. Air Force has awarded a $77.4 million contract to Raytheon Company's Electromagnetic Systems Division for 78 AN/ALQ-184 electronic countermeasure pods and support equipment.
Raytheon will perform the work at its Goleta, Calif., facility. Deliveries are scheduled for September, 1994 to September, 1995.
The pods provide electronic countermeasure support to protect a variety of tactical aircraft against enemy planes and missiles. The contract also covers automated support equipment, warranty, and special test equipment.
The AN/ALQ-184 system experienced its first combat test in Operation Desert Storm, and according to one Air Force general, "was the most reliable electronic pod we had."
Jack L. Gressingh, division vice president and general manager, characterized the award as "further proof that the AN/ALQ-184 provides essential protection for a variety of tactical aircraft. The award once again reflects the impressive reliability records the system has achieved since it went into production.
"The award also reinforces our strategic plan to help the nation and its friends to maintain a solid defense base with state-of-the-art systems and support," Gressingh added.
Since the program was initiated more than a decade ago, he added, the Air Force has awarded Raytheon contracts valued at more than $1 billion. The latest award represents the fourth option of a contract awarded in 1989, bringing the total value of those options to $631 million.
The system is deployed as a jamming pod on F-16s, F-15s, and A-10s stationed at U.S. bases in Japan and Korea, as well as a number of U.S. sites ranging from Alaska to Virginia.
Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is a $9 billion, diversified, international technology-based company with sales in four business segments: Electronics, Aircraft Products, Energy and Environmental, and Major Appliances.
