RAYTHEON AWARDED CONTRACTS FOR MISSILE DEFENSE STUDIES
LEXINGTON, Mass., July 9 /PRNewswire/ Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) today announced that it has been awarded two contracts by the U.S. Army Missile Command in Huntsville, Ala., to perform concept definition studies for the CORPS SAM (surface-to-air missile) Program.
One study is to define the necessary modifications and upgrades to the currently deployed Hawk and Patriot air defense systems to meet CORPS SAM requirements, and the second study is to approach CORPS SAM as a complete new system development.
The contracts call for Raytheon to complete the studies by year end. Raytheon's Missile Systems Division, based in Bedford, Mass., will perform the work.
CORPS SAM will be the new medium-range component of the Army's family of air defense weapons and is intended for deployment early in the next century. It will be the Army Corps' primary air defense system and will be capable of combating both enemy aircraft and tactical missiles.
The Army's design guidelines for CORPS SAM emphasize a system that has high firepower against enemy threats, is highly mobile and can easily be deployed, requires few service personnel to operate, and is fully operable with the military's other air defense systems.
Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is a $9.3 billion diversified technology company with sales in four business segments: Electronics, Aircraft Products, Energy and Environmental, and Major Appliances.
