RAYTHEON AWARDED $327 MILLION PATRIOT CONTRACT FOR KUWAIT

LEXINGTON, Mass., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) today announced it has been awarded a $327 million contract to supply five Patriot fire units and 210 missiles to the government of Kuwait under terms of a foreign military sale. The contract was awarded by the U.S. Army Missile Command in Huntsville, Ala.
This contract is expected to grow to more than $450 million through additional awards for support hardware, test equipment, and required engineering and logistical services.
The order closely follows the announcement of a $1.03 billion order from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for 12 Patriot fire units and 793 Patriot missiles.
William H. Swanson, senior vice president and general manager of Raytheon's Missile Systems Division, said this latest order responds to defensive priorities identified by the government of Kuwait in the aftermath of Operation Desert Storm.
"Kuwait seeks to protect its population and national assets from surprise attack from high performance aircraft, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles," Swanson said. "Patriot will meet that need."
"This order, coupled with the recent Saudi order, dramatically demonstrates the confidence that our Middle East allies have in Patriot," said Walter Trainor, vice president and Patriot program manager. "It also reinforces the system's strong foreign sales potential and reaffirms its value as a continually evolving defensive system.
"We're proud of the fact that Kuwait has chosen Patriot to defend itself from aggression," he added. "With units deployed in both Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, Patriot emerges as the primary line of air defense and a pivotal stabilizing force for the region."
Patriot is the world's only combat-proven air defense system capable of simultaneously tracking and destroying enemy aircraft, tactical ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. Working with the U.S. Army and responding to the system's experiences in the Gulf War, Raytheon maintains an ongoing growth program designed to enhance Patriot's all- around capabilities.
Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is a $9 billion diversified technology company with sales in four business segments: Electronics, Aircraft Products, Energy and Environmental, and Major Appliances.
