RAYTHEON AND FLUOR WIN $1.3 BILLION THAILAND REFINERY PROJECT

LEXINGTON, Mass., and IRVINE, Calif., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- A Fluor Corp. and Raytheon Co. joint venture announced today that it has been awarded a lump-sum project valued at more than $1.3 billion to build a new oil refinery in Thailand for Rayong Refinery Co.
Raytheon and Fluor are performing engineering, design, procurement and construction activities for the refinery and associated facilities in the Map Ta Phut Industrial Complex in Rayong province which is 100 miles south of Bangkok.
Fluor Daniel and Raytheon Engineers & Constructors, the principal engineering and construction units for the two companies, are equal partners in the joint venture.
Shell Internationale Petroleum Maatschappij B.V. is the technical advisor to Rayong Refinery Co., which is a joint venture between the Petroleum Authority of Thailand and Shell.
"This is a major award for Raytheon and its team," said Charles Q. Miller, Raytheon senior vice president and chairman and chief executive of Raytheon Engineers & Constructors. "The project is one of the largest refineries going up in the world today. We are pleased to have been selected by the Petroleum Authority of Thailand, to once again be working with Shell and to further expand our broad project base in the Pacific Rim."
Hugh Coble, group president of Fluor Daniel, said: "This project not only benefits Fluor Daniel and its team, but it will also have a significant impact on the economic, industrial and human resources development of Thailand. We are very pleased to continue our long-term relationship with Shell, and to increase our already significant presence in the Asia Pacific region."
Both executives added that the two companies look forward to working with each other and are committed to the successful completion of the project.
Fluor Daniel, the principal engineering and construction subsidiary of Fluor Corp., previously took $300 million into its backlog on the project, upon receipt of a letter of intent in March of this year.
Engineering, site preparation and procurement are well under way, with mechanical completion scheduled for late 1995. The new refinery will process 145,000 barrels of crude oil per day, plus have the capacity to significantly increase that output.
The refinery will also include storage facilities, loading and unloading stations, and jetty facilities. Extensive facilities will be provided to protect the environment, including sulphur removal and wastewater treatment.
Raytheon Engineers & Constructors provides engineering, construction, operations and maintenance services worldwide, with more than 12,000 employees and an equally large contract field organization. Its units include Singapore-based Asia Badger Inc.
Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, is a $9 billion technology company with sales in four segments; Electronics, Aircraft Products, Energy and Environmental and Major Appliances, which is the primary Raytheon operation working on the Rayong Refinery.
Fluor Daniel Inc., the principal subsidiary of Fluor Corp., is an international engineering, construction, maintenance and technical services company with more than 50 offices worldwide.
