RAYTHEON, NAVY CONDUCT SUCCESSFUL AEGIS-ER MISSILE FLIGHT TEST
LEXINGTON, Mass. Aug. 11/PRNewswire/ -- Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) and the U.S. Navy have conducted a successful flight test of an AEGIS-Extended Range (ER) missile from a MK-41 Vertical Launching System at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico.
Raytheon's Missile Systems Division is designing the guidance and control section for the AEGIS-ER missile and is also responsible for the assembly and test of the missile.
The test, conducted July 2, was the second consecutive successful flight of the AEGIS-ER missile with a new booster motor and improved guidance and control capability. The flight mission successfully demonstrated the missile's long-range and very high-altitude maneuverability.
The AEGIS-ER, also known as the Standard Missile-2 Block IV, is a surface-to-air missile that will complement medium-range Standard Missiles on AEGIS cruisers and destroyers equipped with a MK-41 vertical-launch capability.
The Block IV missile is also a Navy candidate to provide the fleet with an anti-tactical ballistic missile defense because of its ability to perform at long ranges and high altitudes. The missile's advanced technologies provide a significant performance improvement over previous versions of the Standard Missile.
Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is a technology-based, multi-industry company with sales in four business segments: Electronics, Aircraft Products, Energy and Environmental, and Major Appliances. Raytheon sales totaled $9.3 billion in 1991.
