RAYTHEON, AEGIS MAKE IT SEVEN STRAIGHT

LEXINGTON, Mass., Dec. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Navy and Raytheon Company (NYSE: RTN) used a Standard Missile-2 (SM-2) Block IV missile to intercept a small, supersonic, very high altitude target recently at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. Raytheon is the developer and designer for this improved version of the Standard Missile, already being produced by the company.
The recent exercise was the seventh consecutive successful flight of an SM-2 Block IV missile, and the fourth in a series of eight tests designed to demonstrate its capabilities against a variety of high performance aerial targets.
The missile, launched from an MK-41 vertical launch system, intercepted a Beech Aircraft target drone traveling at supersonic speed. The missile's advanced guidance, fuzing, and warhead performed flawlessly, resulting in the destruction of the target and successful completion of all test objectives.
"Block IV's performance continues to be most impressive," said Captain Robert Wilson, the Navy's Standard Missile program manager, "and its enhanced capabilities form a cornerstone for the Navy's new role in ballistic missile defense."
William H. Swanson, senior vice president and general manager of Raytheon's Missile Systems Division, said the test "again demonstrated SM-2 Block IV's capabilities against challenging targets.
"The four guidance tests we have conducted to date," he added, "have demonstrated SM-2 Block IV at medium, high, and very high altitudes, as required both for the missile's expanded anti-aircraft warfare mission and for its future role in tactical ballistic missile defense."
Plans call for the Block IV to provide the fleet with an area defense capability against tactical ballistic missiles.
Raytheon, headquartered in Lexington, Mass., is a $9 billion international technology company with sales in four business segments: Electronics, Aircraft Products, Energy and Environmental, and Major Appliances.
