RAYCOM PRODUCTION OF 'LONE STARS' TO FEATURE
REVEALING INTERVIEWS WITH TEXAS' TOP ATHLETES
CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- David Robinson, Noland Ryan and Warren Moon reveal a personal -- sometimes surprising, sometimes funny, sometimes soft -- side when Raycom, the nation's leading independent sports programmer, presents "Lone Stars," a series of three one-hour shows featuring in-depth interviews with superstar athletes in Texas.
Dave Barnett, veteran play-by-play announcer for the San Antonio Spurs and Raycom's Southwest Conference football and basketball telecasts, conducts the Barbara Walters-style interviews in the privacy of the athletes' homes. In his interview with Robinson, Barnett gets the 7-foot Spurs center to sing and play the saxophone.
"This is a show that will take Texas by storm," writes Jim Lefko, San Antonio Light sports media columnist. "Barnett's interviewing skills and Steinfeld's (producer-director Robert Steinfeld) technical prowess make it a certain hit."
The first show, to air over local stations between July 4-19, features Robinson, 1991 NBA Rookie of the Year; Texas Rangers pitcher Ryan, Major League Baseball's all-time strikeout leader; and Baylor graduate Michael Johnson, the gold-medal favorite in the 200-meter dash at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.
The second show, airing between Aug. 1-16, takes an in-depth look at "Texans on Tour," a feature on the state's PGA golfers, including Ben Crenshaw, Tom Kite, Bruce Litzke, Lanny Wadkins and Jim Nantz, a former University of Houston golfer who is now CBS Sports' top golf announcer. Also on the show are Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman and Dallas native and Charlotte Hornets forward Larry Johnson, 1992 NBA Rookie of the Year.
Airing between Aug. 29-Sept. 13, the final show of the series features Dallas Cowboys all-pro receiver Michael Irvin and Houston Oilers quarterback Moon, who led Houston to its first AFC Central title last year.
"Raycom takes great pride in producing first-class television programming, whether it be sporting events or studio shows," says Rick Ray, Raycom chief executive officer. "We're excited about the tremendous opportunity 'Lone Stars' gives our advertisers to reach a large, loyal Texas audience. We are equally excited about giving that audience a top-quality, informative and entertaining telecast."
Headquartered in Charlotte with offices in Dallas, New York and Chicago, Raycom annually produces and televises more than 500 sporting events and related studio shows. This past year, Raycom produced and televised a record-number 413 college basketball games, including an unprecedented 26-game schedule on the ABC network. Raycom also produces and televises college football, including Southwest Conference games; Houston Oilers preseason games, and entertainment and sports shows such as the first-ever telecast of the Domino's Pizza Naismith Awards given to college basketball's top players and coaches.
