RAY DREAM INTRODUCES JAG II RESOLUTION BOOSTING FOR DIGITAL IMAGES

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Ray Dream Inc. today announced JAG(R) II for the Macintosh(R), a major upgrade to the award- winning JAG (Jaggies Are Gone). Building on the industry's leading anti-aliasing product, JAG II incorporates a revolutionary new algorithm which can actually boost the resolution of digital images.
"JAG was always the best tool for automatic anti-aliasing," said Hal Rucker, president of Rucker Huggins. "Now, with resolution boosting in JAG II, it's analogous to PostScript for bitmapped art."
JAG II features a completely revised edge detection algorithm which finds the jagged edges in an image -- whether the image is black and white, eight-, 16-, 24- or 32-bit color -- and compares them to the background. JAG II determines whether to use the original technique of adding intermediate colors to blend the edges or to take advantage of the new resolution-boosting algorithm to maintain the document's color palette and smooth the jagged edges through increased resolution. This ability to maintain the color palette is a vital tool when working with monochrome images on laser printers which don't support the use of the intermediate color (gray), or when a restricted color palette is in use. The added resolution allows a crisp, clear image at any size.
JAG has proven to be a popular post-production tool with customers who use image editing, paint and animation programs. Anti-aliasing within these applications significantly degrades image-processing performance. By making anti-aliasing and resolution-boosting a post-production process, JAG II gives users improved productivity without compromising the quality of their work.
"The proliferation of clip-art libraries and low-priced graphics software has opened the door to a flood of digital images," said Eric Hautemont, president of Ray Dream. "With JAG II, our customers can now incorporate these images into professional quality documents and presentations, at a low cost, without having to worry about how they will print or show. This is a boon for the casual desktop publisher."
In addition to supporting bitmapped PICT and PICS files for the Macintosh, JAG II now supports QuickTime, TIFF, PhotoCD, MacPaint and EPS file formats. Current JAG customers who work with animation files will find this extremely useful when creating multimedia or QuickTime- based presentations.
JAG II retails for $129, and will ship in June. Registered JAG customers can upgrade to JAG II for $39. Customer who purchased JAG after April 1, 1993, will receive a free upgrade for a shipping and handling charge of $9.95. JAG is also available for Windows at $99.95 retail.
