Starla Records specialises in soul, jazz and funk releases often 45rpm vinyl singles distributed in small numbers around the world. Among the releases is a double A-side by The DT6 that included (Theme From) The Baden Persuader and on the flip-side Emeli, billed as Emeli Sande & Marco with The DT6. Takes was recorded at Marco Rea's Barne Studio in Clydebank, West Dunbartonshire.
"Lorne Cowieson had recorded Emeli singing on his phone and playing piano," Starla's Mark Robb recalled. "They were looking for gigs at Glasgow's Rio Cafe. For a while, she was called Rio Sande.
"Marco did a full session with her. She was a really nice girl, studying at Glasgow University. She looked different to the way she looks now. She had more of a soul look, including an Afro."
Rea sang the lead vocal on the duet with Emeli. "It was just at that point she was changing her name to Emeli," Rea said.
"There was another song that was never released that we wrote together in the studio around the piano. We decided to release Takes as a double A-side because it was starting to cook."
