RANGER SPLASH -- FORD'S NEW YOUTH TRUCK

DETROIT, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Ford (NYSE: F) is making more waves as America's fun truck leader with a new concept car in the compact pickup segment called the Ranger Splash. It is designed to appeal to younger buyers, women and other non-traditional pickup truck buyers who are crossing over from the car market.
The Ranger Splash is the nation's first compact pickup with a flared pickup box. It represents an all-out effort to heighten the appeal of Ford trucks, in these market segments where the name of the game is expressive styling and exceptional value.
Ford Division expects annual sales of about 35,000 Splash models, which go on sale at Ford dealerships in March. The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the Splash 4x2 starts at $12,175, and $16,434 for the Splash 4x4.
Up front, Splash shares the contemporary look of the completely restyled Ford Ranger. Color-keyed outside mirrors, front and rear bumpers, bodyside moldings, grille, valance panel and special tape graphics add to the eye-catching ability of the new Ford compact pickup.
Splash's road manners are exceptional. The Splash 4x2 comes with a 2.3-liter electronically fuel injected (EFI) I-4 engine and is the first Ranger to offer standard 15-inch wheels with P235/60 tires. In addition, the ride height for 4x2 models is 0.75 inches lower in the front and 1.5 inches lower in the rear. Lowering the ride height required a support suspension package for the Ranger Splash 4x2 that includes new springs, shock absorbers, and a camber adjuster, all contributing to the improved handling.
The Ranger Splash 4x4 comes with a 3.0-liter EFI V-6 engine, the Ford electric shift "Touch Drive" transfer case that lets drivers "shift on the fly," and cast aluminum deep dish 15-inch wheels with P235/75 tires.
The Splash's flared pickup box is made of a tough fiberglass, which made possible its more refined shape. Other functional advantages are steps at the front of the pickup box, four tie-down hooks and a molding on top of the pickup box to protect the box outer panel. Ranger Splash standard equipment also includes electronic AM/FM stereo with cassette and clock, sail-mount electric mirrors, and mud flaps on 4x4 models.
Even though the Splash looks sportier and has superior handling characteristics, it is still very much a Ranger when it comes to load- hauling and towing capabilities. Its 108-inch wheelbase offers a standard 1,050-pound payload and a 4,140-pound gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) on 4x2 models and a 1,250-pound payload and 4,600-pound GVWR for 4x4 models. Towing capabilities range up to 6,000 pounds when properly equipped.
In addition to the 2.3-liter I-4 and 3.0-liter V-6 engines, the Ranger lineup also offers an optional 4.0-liter EFI V-6 engine. All can be teamed with five-speed manual overdrive or four-speed automatic overdrive transmissions. Horsepower ratings are 98, 145 and 160 for the 2.3-, 3.0- and 4.0-liter engines, respectively.
