RANDOM HOUSE ANNOUNCES DR. SEUSS PICTURE-BOOK AWARD

RANDOM HOUSE ANNOUNCES DR. SEUSS PICTURE-BOOK AWARD
NEW YORK, May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cat in the Hat, Horton and The

Grinch are but a few of the memorable characters created by Dr. Seuss, one of the world's favorite children's authors. Now, Random House will pay tribute to Dr. Seuss and the classics he created, with the Dr. Seuss Picture-Book Award.
Launched to help discover and develop unique talent in children's literature, the Dr. Seuss Picture-Book Award invites any fledging author/artist submit a manuscript for consideration. The winner will receive a $25,000 award and a publishing contract with one of Random Houses's juvenile imprints.
According to Jerry Harrison, president of Random House Merchandise Group, "When Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) passed away last year, he left behind a heritage of children's classics that will enrich the lives and gladden the hearts of children forever. We at Random House, who were privileged to work with and publish this extraordinary talent, are honoring his memory in a manner that he would heartily endorse. We're not trying to find imitators of his style -- we want to find and nurture other original talents who will create the great picture-books for future generations of children -- and their parents."
The annual award will be judged by a panel of independent experts; the 1992 judges are: Elizabeth Huntoon, director of children's services at the Chicago Public Library; Bernice Cullinan, professor, early childhood and elementary education, New York University; Shelley Harwayne, director of the Manhattan New School; Valerie Lewis, owner of Hicklebee's bookstore in San Jose, Calif.; Audrey Geisel, Dr. Seuss's wife; and Marc Brown, the author/illustrator of many children's books, including Knopf's, "Read-Aloud Rhymes For the Very Young" and Little Brown's Arthur the Aardvark series.
To enter, contestants must be at least 16 years old and a United States citizen or resident; write and illustrate the book; submit a complete, typewritten manuscript for a 32-to 48-page book; a layout dummy and a minimum of three pieces of finished original art.
In addition, contestants can not have published more than one book or have more than one book under contract with another publisher. Entries must be received by Dec. 1, 1992 and the winner will be announced on March 2, 1993, Dr. Seuss's birthday.
All entries should be sent to Dr. Seuss Picture-Book Award Contest, Random House Juvenile Division, 225 Park Ave. South, New York, N.Y., 10003.
