     RAND SMITH NAMED CHIEF ACCOUNTING OFFICER OF NUI CORPORATION
    BEDMINSTER, N.J., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Rand W. Smith, 41, has been named chief accounting officer of NUI Corporation (NYSE: NUI), the company announced today.  Smith currently serves as assistant vice president and controller of the company and was elected to this newly created position by the NUI board of directors.
    "Rand has been instrumental in establishing the coordination and consolidation of financial information within NUI," said John Kean, Jr., executive vice president and chief financial officer.  "NUI has and will continue to benefit from his broad experience and accounting knowledge. Rand, in his new role as chief accounting officer, will be responsible for the further consolidation of NUI's financial reporting structure, positioning the company to achieve further growth in our multi-state service area."
    Smith joined NUI Corporation in 1989 from Continental Can Company, where he served as assistant controller.  He joined Continental Can in 1979 and was named director of accounting and finance of that company in 1983.  Prior to joining Continental Can, Smith was with Arthur Anderson & Co., independent public accountants, from 1974 to 1979.
    Smith holds a B.A. and an M.B.A. with a major in accounting from Hofstra University.  He has been a Certified Public Accountant (New York State) since 1976.
    Smith has two sons and resides in Fairfield, Conn.
    NUI Corporation, based in Bedminster, N.J., is an exempt public utility holding company engaged in the distribution of natural gas to approximately 312,000 customers through its principal operating divisions, Elizabeth Gas Company in New Jersey and City Gas Company in Florida.
