RAND MCNALLY'S DIGITAL DATABASE GIVES DESKTOP PUBLISHERS THE WORLD

SKOKIE, Ill., Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Rand McNally announced today that it has unveiled plans for a new digital cartographic database that will revolutionize the use of map applications in the desktop publishing industry.
Company officials introduced the Rand World Database at the 45th Frankfurt Book Fair -- the world's premier gathering of international publishers. The fair, held this week in Frankfurt, Germany, draws up to 8,000 exhibitors from nearly 100 countries.
The Rand World Database(TM) -- scheduled to be completed this fall -- will allow geographic data to be output to film or digital formats for print or electronic applications in desktop publishing, as well as for PC software and multimedia platforms.
The Rand World Database is stored on workstation-based platforms where geographic data can be projected and reproduced at high speed. The data can be exported to the desktop publishing environment, where it can easily be manipulated for illustration and mapping purposes.
According to Henry J. Feinberg, president of Rand McNally Publishing Group, who is attending this week's fair, the Rand World Database will be an invaluable resource to publishers of dictionaries, textbooks, reference books, travel guides, encyclopedias and others.
"Rand McNally is committed to serving the growing global market of electronic database publishing," said Feinberg. "This product makes available maps from our cartographers at a scale that's perfect for desktop applications."
The Rand World Database will feature more than 50,000 place names and major cartographic components ranging from coastlines and contours to waterfalls, to highways and railways.
Rand McNally, which was founded in 1856, is privately held and operates six businesses, including the Publishing Group -- the world's largest commercial map maker.
