RAILAMERICA APPOINTS FORMER U.S. FEDERAL RAILROAD ADMINISTRATOR TO ITS BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 LAKE RIDGE, Va., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Gary O. Marino, chairman of the board of RailAmerica, Inc. (NASDAQ: RAIL) today announced the appointment of John M. Sullivan to a newly created seat on the company's board of directors.
 Commenting further, Marino stated, "We are both pleased and honored to add John Sullivan to our company's board of directors. I am confident that his distinguished career and knowledge of the rail industry will greatly augment the board's ability to help guide RailAmerica's growth."
 From 1977 until 1981 Sullivan served, upon appointment by President Carter, as administrator of the United Stated Federal Railroad Administration. From 1982 until 1990 Sullivan was president and chief executive officer of Haug Die Casting, Inc., where he remains as a director. From 1961 until 1977 Sullivan owned and operated John M. Sullivan Co., a sales agency for industrial components operating in the mid-Atlantic states. Sullivan received a B.S. in Engineering from the United States Naval Academy, and from 1946 until 1954 served with the United States Navy as an officer, and as a carrier aviator.
 RailAmerica, Inc., is a publicly held transportation holding company which operates and develops short-line and regional railroads. Through its subsidiaries, the company operates 190 miles of rail line in Michigan's "Thumb" region, located approximately 100 miles north of Detroit. The company is presently evaluating a number of new railroad acquisition opportunities.
