RAGE OVER CAR KILLER.

Byline: By LUCY THORNTON

A JUDGE jailed a hit-run driver who killed a man for just 28 MONTHS - then slammed prosecutors for not letting him impose a stiffer sentence.

Tory councillor Inkthab Alam ploughed into Christopher Benson, 20, while driving at 70mph in a 40mph zone. He left his victim dying, fled the scene, torched his car and reported it stolen.

But father of five Alam, 31, was charged only with careless driving, not death by dangerous driving which can carry a sentence of up to 14 years.

Branding the decision "nonsensical", Judge James Stewart stormed: "This case is a matter of amazement.

"It justifies a charge of death by dangerous driving.

"A young man's life was snuffed out and prosecutors charge the defendant with driving without care?

"The victim's family will want to know why, as I do." Judge Stewart even asked prosecutors at Leeds crown court to consider recharging Alam. But after two hours they stood by their original decision.

Christopher was mown down crossing a well lit road at 2am in Bradford. After four months' lack of co-operation, Alam admitted careless driving, perverting justice and failing to stop.

Crown prosecutors said: "We do not agree with the judge's comments on this sensitive case."
