 RADISSON HOTELS IN SOUTHERN FLORIDA
CONTINUE OPERATIONS IN WAKE OF ANDREW
MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Radisson Hotels International today announced that nearly all of its hotels and resorts in Southern Florida remain open in the wake of Hurricane Andrew. Radisson Hotels in Boca Raton, Fort Myers, Marco Island, Miami, Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach, Southern Florida, and Freeport and Nassau in the Bahamas, experienced minimal damage from Hurricane Andrew, although some locations remained without power. Due to advance preparation and evacuation procedures, no guests or employees were injured.
Facing reported winds up to 160 miles per hour, the Radisson Hotels in Miami experienced the most damage. The Radisson Mart Plaza Hotel evacuated its 400 guests and employees Sunday night to sleep in the adjoining Miami International Merchandise Mart and Expo/Center. Approximately 50 windows were broken at the hotel from the strong winds, with minor rain damage to some rooms and the hotel was initially without electricity or water.
The Pan American Ocean Resort evacuated all of its guests and employees in advance. Gravel and roofing materials from the three-story section of the roof were blown off down to the framework. Another section of roofing came loose and smashed through the Ocean Terrace Dining Room restaurant window, which is now boarded. The hotel basement received a few inches of water. Subject to the electricity being turned back on, the hotel expects to be back in operation by this weekend. Local officials estimate electricity will be restored in four days to one week.
With remarkable preparation, The Radisson Suite Beach Resort on Marco Island evacuated its guests by early Sunday afternoon. The executive staff was evacuated by Sunday evening to safe houses off the island -- one of those being General Manager Bill Myers' personal residence. The property experienced minor damage to the grounds and minimal water damage to a few rooms. Thanks to the preparation of the staff, there were no broken windows or other major damage even though the eye of Hurricane Andrew passed within 15 miles of the hotel's front door. A special team of management and property engineers arrived at the hotel within 30 minutes of the storm's passing and by nightfall had reopened the resort. Guests have been returning and the property is fully operational. There was no major damage to the beach area. The hotel is offering super saver rates for local residents who need shelter.
Radisson's Orlando, Palm Beach and Boca Raton properties received numerous calls and walk-ins for reservations on Sunday as the hurricane approached. The hotels accommodated as many hurricane evacuees as possible, but many were near full with August high-season business. Closed on Monday with many flights diverted through Orlando International Airport, The Miami International Airport is expected to resume operations late this afternoon.
The other Radisson hotels in southern Florida had very minimal or no damage. The two Bahama locations had no damage from the high winds and strong rains. The company will keep a close watch on the storm as it approaches the Gulf Coast with Radisson Hotels in New Orleans; Mobile, Ala.; Houston and South Padre Island, Texas.
