RADIOACTIVE HOME IN CALIFORNIA FIXED

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The home that had the highest recorded radon level in California has been fixed, according to Bill Hellums, president of Radon Testing Services Inc. He added that "if you sit in room with high levels of radon you are sitting in an odorless, colorless, radioactive cloud and the cancer it causes doesn't show up until years later." The original radon levels were reported to be 50 times higher than the EPA action level of 4 picocuries per liter. Radon, or more precisely the isotope radon 222, is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can seep into any building. It is a Class A carcinogen, and the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. According to EPA estimates, it causes between 7,000 and 30,000 deaths per year.
The home, located near Felton in the Santa Cruz Mountains, was successfully mitigated to 1 pCi/L. Although this particular home had the highest radon level found so far in the state, elevated levels of radon have been found in all counties in the Bay Area. In most homes, elevated radon levels can be fixed for less than $2,000.
Home is not the only place one might be exposed to radon. The results of the national radon surveys showed that 20 percent of all the schools in the United States. will have at least one room with elevated levels. These findings, along with the possibility that children are more sensitive to the effects of radiation exposure, have prompted the EPA to recommend that not only all homes, but all schools, public and private, test rooms on ground level and below.
"Based on the EPA National School Radon Testing and the incidence of elevated radon levels found in every Bay Area county, I would be surprised if there is one school district in the Bay Area without elevated radon levels in some classrooms," said Hellums. "In fact," he stated, "even though most schools are not testing for radon, the data from the California Department of Health school radon survey, and early data from one Bay Area school district, confirm the presence of elevated levels in some local classrooms."
Radon Testing Services Inc. is an EPA-listed radon testing laboratory and radon mitigation company located in San Francisco.
