RADIO CITY'S MICHAEL JACKSON SUPER BOWL HALFTIME SHOW ATTRACTS LARGEST AUDIENCE IN TV HISTORY; SHOW IS LARGEST-EVER VIEWED ENTERTAINMENT EVENT

NEW YORK, Feb. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- The final results are now in, and the new industry records are firmly in place. The Super Bowl XXVII Halftime Show, created and produced by Radio City Music Hall Productions and starring the King of Pop Michael Jackson, was the most widely-viewed entertainment event in TV history and was pivotal in attracting the largest viewing audience in TV history.
The half-hour time slot for the Halftime Show (45.5 rating/65 share) led all segments of the Super Bowl broadcast but one, only slightly edged by the half-hour leading immediately into the Halftime Show (46.1/67). The entire Super Bowl telecast set a record with an audience of 133,400,000, the largest TV viewing audience in history.
The National Football League tapped Radio City to create and produce a show which would boost viewership, attract advertisers and deliver a message. Traditionally, ratings drop one to three points between the second quarter and the halftime show, and last year the drop-off was a staggering 20 percent. This year, however, the halftime show rating was higher than the rating for the game itself.
"Our commitment to the NFL was to give them a show with a level of anticipation and excitement that would equal the Super Bowl itself," said Radio City Executive Vice President and Executive Producer Arlen Kantarian, who along with Executive Producer Scott Sanders recommended and signed Jackson to the NFL event. "The results prove that Michael Jackson remains the biggest name in entertainment with tremendous cross- over appeal. The real story of this ratings success was the magic of bringing the world's greatest entertainer to the world's greatest sporting event."
NFL Executive Director of Special Events Jim Steeg said, "The NFL came to Radio City to help maintain ratings and to deliver a message. With the results now in, they clearly delivered on both counts. Radio City's ability to book talent, along with their unique production style, made this show our most memorable halftime ever."
 Months in the Making
Radio City first developed the concept for the show more than 18 months ago, and signed Jackson to star last September. The company then put together an award-winning production team, and went on to present a show that included 3,500 children from the Los Angeles area, a 10-ton stage, pyrotechnics from four different countries and a dramatic card stunt based on children's artwork that included the entire Rose Bowl crowd.
Months of planning and rehearsals were required to coordinate the production, including the challenge of "building" the stage on the 50-yard line during a commercial break and assembling the largest-ever halftime cast in under five minutes.
According to Sanders, Jackson saw the Halftime Show as an opportunity to promote the message of his Heal the World Foundation, which benefits children all over the world. "On Super Bowl Sunday, Michael Jackson and 3,500 children sent a powerful message to people everywhere...all in spectacular style." Jackson's performance included segments of his popular hits "Billie Jean," "Black and White," "Jam," "We Are the World," and "Heal the World."
 Challenges Ahead
Radio City is moving aggressively into entertainment projects outside of its famed New York Music Hall, and is now looking to apply this proven concept to other major sporting events, such as soccer's upcoming World Cup '94 and the Centennial Olympic Games. Radio City has also produced the 1988 Halftime Show, the 50th Anniversary of Mt. Rushmore, the Eiffel Tower Centennial in Paris, the 100th anniversary of The Wall Street Journal and the 1991 U.S. Olympic Festival Games in Los Angeles.
Upcoming Radio City projects include producing a worldwide tour of the theatrical "Jesus Was His Name" and a New York-based concert event entitled "Country Takes Manhattan." Radio City Music Hall Productions is a subsidiary of the Rockefeller Group Inc.
