 RADIATION SYSTEMS, INC., ANNOUNCES AWARD
OF FIRST MAJOR ANTENNA CONTRACT FOR U.K. PCN
STERLING, Va., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- Richard E. Thomas, chairman and chief executive officer, Radiation Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: RADS), today announced that CSA Limited, its recently acquired U.K. subsidiary based in Rochester, England, has been awarded a two-year contract to supply sector antennas for the construction of PCN telecommunication networks in the U.K.
The order was placed by Parallel Networks Alliance, the capital and cost sharing organization established by Unitel and Mercury Personal Communications (Mercury PCN) who have each been awarded PCN licenses in the U.K.
Unitel is a partnership of US West, Thorn EMI and Northern Telecom, and Mercury PCN is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Cable & Wireless plc.
The contract, initially worth over $450,000 (258,000 pounds sterling), will provide Unitel/Mercury PCN with a state-of-the-art product incorporating the latest microwave stripline techniques. The design represents the successful transfer of technologies used on military and radar antennas to a large volume civilian market.
Described by Robin Potter on behalf of Unitel/Mercury PCN as a key element in their respective network roll-out plan, the antenna will be the vital radio link between the public and the nationwide telecommunication services to be launched imminently by the two licensees.
Thomas stated that this important contract won by CSA Limited against very strong international competition will put Radiation Systems in the forefront of antenna expertise and experience in the growing world markets for mobile and personal communications. "Our strategy to serve the European markets from an established base in U.K. will be strongly boosted by this award and will give added impetus to our plans to transfer appropriate technologies from our other U.S. divisions to the international market place," he said.
PCN represents the next generation of mobile and radio-access networks based on digital cellular radio technology operating at the 1800 MHz frequency range. This technology will enable PCN to provide a high quality and high capacity service at a reduced per unit cost compared with existing mobile cellular systems.
Radiation Systems, Inc., designs, manufactures and installs turnkey satellite earth stations as well as a broad range of antenna systems and components for radar and navigational aids, air traffic control, tactical military, scientific research, terrestrial microwave, TV and radio broadcast systems and personal and mobile communications.
